Product Description

Diwali is a sparkling new musical for 8 to 14 year olds exploring the traditions of the Hindu faith. It is based on The Ramayana, the great Indian epic poem, retold for hundreds of generations and helps explain the Festival of Lights.

As the exciting and highly dramatic story unfolds, we meet Soorpanaka with her extraordinary nose, Ravana the evil ten-headed demon, Hanuman the magic monkey man, the beautiful and gentle Sita, handsome Rama and lots of other unforgettable, colourful characters.

Sam and Mat Dixon-Szul's music is melodically and rhythmically infectious and they have incorporated authentic musical idioms where appropriate. There are lots of opportunities for children's musical imrpovisation if required.

The musical is presented with a mixture of live performance and shadow puppetry and complements topics of promoting understanding, tolerance and appreciation of the Hindu faith (the shadow puppets can be omitted if preferred, or the musical can be presented using only the shadow puppets). It also acts as a springboard to discovering Eastern culture and art forms. The Teacher's Book contains production notes and music score along with a CD containing complete performances of all the songs, plus imaginative backing tracks to sing along to. The Script is available separately (order code GA11418).
